It is with immense sadness that I have to inform you of the death of Mike Simpson early this morning. He was comfortable and surrounded by his wife Val and three daughters.

Mike was a huge supporter of the Liberal Democrats and worked tirelessly in whatever way he could. His history with the party goes back longer than I have been alive, but in the time I have known him he has been Regional Chair, Regional Treasurer, a senior returning officer, the agent for our two MEP's and has undertaken countless other roles and duties.

Most recently he masterminded our region's response to the Boundary Commission and was agent for Nick O'Shea in the Surrey Police and Crime Commissioner election, both hugely important tasks with very little recognition or reward.

For me personally he was always a tower of strength and my go-to person for good sensible help and advice.

I'm sure I speak for everyone that knew him that our thoughts are with his family at this difficult time.

There is to be a small family-only funeral service, at Mike's request. If you would like to donate to one of Mike's favourite charities by way of remembrance, please consider the Douglas Brunton Centre Amenity Fund or a donation to the Royal National Lifeboat Institution.
