Commenting on John Healey's article in the Independent, in which he outlines why he will be campaigning against fairer votes, Liberal Democrat Party President and Chair of the Liberal Democrat Yes to Fairer Votes Campaign, Tim Farron said:

"John Healey is clutching at straws today as his arguments simply don't stack up. Scaremongering by telling lies about hung parliaments and how the BNP will benefit, shows just how desperate the No to AV campaign is.

"Australia has had the Alternative Vote for 90 years and with only two hung parliaments, it has had fewer in that time than the UK has had under first past the post.

"The Alternative Vote won't benefit the BNP. That's why they're campaigning against it and that's why they will be joining John Healey on the doorstep.

"Let's be clear, all voters will get a stronger voice: no one will get more than one vote. It's like if you order a pint of real ale and they're out, if you get a Guinness instead you only had one pint."
